Rohtang Pass, a high mountain pass which is on the Eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayan mountain ranges, is around 51 kms away from Manali in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It connects the Kullu valley with the Spiti and Lahaul valleys and is a gateway to several other places in the north. Rohtang Pass height is 13,051 feet or 3,978 meters above. It is the best snow point of Manali and is visited by lakhs of tourists every year from all over the country as well as other countries of the world. This pass provides a natural divide between the arid high-altitude Lahaul and Spiti valleys having a Buddhist culture in the north and the Kullu valley with a primary Hindu culture in the South. The Beas river emerges from underground and flows southward on the southern side of this pass. The Chandra river flows from the eastern Himalayas in the westwards on the northern side of the Pass. The meaning of ‘Rohtang Pass’ is ‘Ground of Corpses’ and it is because a number of people have died crossing this place. However, the roads are quite well maintained now. It is one such destination that is a popular stop over leading to beautiful valleys of Lahaul and Spiti and so, a number of travelers or wanderers that visit Manali, do visit this place.
